Visiting scholar Nicholas Carnes on class, politics, and policy

The Maine Chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network invites you to participate in any or all of these exciting, upcoming events featuring Dr. Nicholas Carnes. Carnes is Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and the Co-Director of the Research Triangle chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network.

His research focuses on how the shortage of working class people in American legislatures leads to policies that favor the interests of the wealthy. In addition, Nick is interested in strategies and programs that encourage and support working class candidates for public office. These themes are particularly relevant as we face a shutdown of the federal government whose most severe and immediate effects will be felt by the working class.

Carnes will participate in three talks and events on these important, interconnected subjects:

“Why do Millionaires Run the Country?” (Wednesday, October 2nd at 12-1:30 pm at Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow St., Bangor)

“Panel Discussion—Balancing the Ballot: Working Class Candidates for Public Office.” (Wednesday, October 2nd 6:45-8 pm at Eastern Maine Labor Council, 20 Ivers St., Brewer)

Note: This talk will be a panel discussion with working class individuals who have run for public office in the past, and those working in labor unions and non-profits to support them.

“The Cash Ceiling: How Expensive Elections Affect Who Runs for Office” (Thursday, October 3rd 12:30-1:45 pm in the Bangor Room, Memorial Union, University of Maine
